# Checkend vs BugTape after Checkend's October 2026 change

**Short answer:** Checkend changed its product between 16 and 26 October 2026. On 16 October, checkend.com described error tracking for coding agents. On 26 October, [checkend.com](https://checkend.com/) describes self-hosted web analytics with an MCP server and a CLI, and says Checkend is not released yet (checked 26 Oct 2026). Its [modules page](https://checkend.com/docs/concepts/modules.md) lists errors as a planned module and says the errors work has not started (checked 26 Oct 2026). If you need self-hosted error tracking for a coding agent today, read [Self-hosted error tracking for coding agents](/compare/self-hosted-agent-error-tracking/) or [Sentry alternatives](/alternatives/sentry/). If you want hosted error and browser capture that your agent reads over MCP, BugTape does that today.

No account: `npx -y bugtape --help` prints the commands and does not sign you in. The demo MCP at https://app.bugtape.ai/demo/mcp needs no sign-in. Your own workspace needs one.

Page owner: Jaco Veldsman, hi@bugtape.ai. Last checked 2026-10-26. I build BugTape. The 16 October column below is from our earlier check of checkend.com on that day; that version of the site is no longer online. The 26 October facts come from [checkend.com](https://checkend.com/), its [docs](https://checkend.com/docs/), its [self-host page](https://checkend.com/self-host/), its [free-forever page](https://checkend.com/free-forever/), [Checkend Cloud](https://cloud.checkend.com/signup) and the [Checkend GitHub organisation](https://github.com/Checkend), all read on 26 October 2026. Checkend has not published a note that explains the change, as far as we could find.

## What changed

| | checkend.com on 16 Oct 2026 | checkend.com on 26 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | Error tracking for coding agents. Public alpha 0.8.0 | Self-hosted web analytics with Search Console and Bing data. "Checkend is not released yet." Docs version v0.1 (unreleased). [checkend.com](https://checkend.com/) |
| Error tracking | Sentry protocol ingest, an issue brief for the agent, and a fix that is marked verified after a deploy and a quiet period | A planned module. The docs say "Errors, logs and uptime are not started" and that the plans can change. [Modules](https://checkend.com/docs/concepts/modules.md) |
| Hosting | Checkend Cloud, or self-host on a Cloudflare Worker + D1 or Node + SQLite | Self-host only, one binary on a Linux server or Docker. The self-host page says "There is no cloud version." [Self-host](https://checkend.com/self-host/) |
| Agent access | MCP, `ce` CLI, HTTP API | MCP (OAuth or API token), `ce` CLI and a REST API, for analytics data. [Connect your agent](https://checkend.com/docs/start/connect-your-agent.md) |
| Licence | Apache-2.0 | The core licence is Apache 2.0. Paid prices are not published. [Free forever](https://checkend.com/free-forever/) |

## What still points to the old error tracker

- [Checkend Cloud](https://cloud.checkend.com/signup) still shows a sign-up page marked "Early access" with the line "Error tracking for coding agents" (checked 26 Oct 2026). Its Terms and Privacy links go to checkend.com/terms and checkend.com/privacy, and both returned 404 on 26 October.
- The [`ce` CLI repository](https://github.com/Checkend/checkend-cli) released version 0.4.0 on 12 October 2026. Its README still calls Checkend "open-source error tracking for coding agents" (checked 26 Oct 2026).
- The main source repository, github.com/Checkend/checkend, returns "not found" (checked 26 Oct 2026). The [Community Edition repository](https://github.com/Checkend/community-edition) clones that repository in its setup script, so that install path cannot fetch the source today. From outside, we cannot tell if the repository was made private, renamed or deleted.
- The language SDK repositories in the [Checkend GitHub organisation](https://github.com/Checkend) (Node.js, Python, Go, Ruby, PHP, Java, Elixir, .NET, Next.js and the browser) are public and not archived. Their last changes are from January 2026 or earlier (checked 26 Oct 2026).

We read this as follows: checkend.com does not offer error tracking today, and Checkend plans to add errors back as a module of the analytics product. Until checkend.com says the errors module has shipped, treat Checkend as unreleased for error tracking. Ask Checkend (help@checkend.com, listed on Checkend Cloud) before you depend on the Cloud sign-up.

## Checkend and BugTape today

| | Checkend (26 Oct 2026) | BugTape |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Web analytics that an agent reads and acts on. Not released yet | Captures errors and failures on web, server and iOS, groups repeats into one issue, and gives the issue to your coding agent |
| Errors | Planned, not started | Browser errors, failed requests and requests that hang, plus reports users file. Server errors from `@bugtape/node` and `bugtape` on PyPI. Swift captures handled errors and breadcrumbs only |
| Browser evidence | Page views, custom events, goals and web vitals | DOM replay rebuilt from DOM events (not screen video), the network requests and the console. Servers have no replay or console |
| Agent access | MCP, `ce` CLI, REST API | Remote MCP with OAuth on every plan, `npx -y bugtape connect claude` (or cursor, codex, grok), signed webhooks |
| Hosting | Self-host only; the installer is not released | Hosted only, with data stored in Sydney. No self-host |
| Licence | Apache 2.0 core | Hosted service |
| Price | No public pricing on checkend.com. Self-host is free; the free-forever page says prices come with the first paid offer | Free $0, no card: 100 new issues and 150 credits a month. Prepaid credits $10 for 2,000. Pro $29 a month. On Free and Prepaid credits each agent read of a bug costs 2 credits; reads are free on Pro. [Pricing](/pricing/) |

## Where each one fits

- **You want private web analytics that your agent can read, on your own server.** Checkend aims at this, once it ships. BugTape does not do web analytics.
- **You want self-hosted error tracking that keeps your Sentry SDK.** Look at Thermite, Okapi and urgentry on the [self-hosted trackers page](/compare/self-hosted-agent-error-tracking/), or at the [Sentry alternatives](/alternatives/sentry/) list. Those products are released today.
- **You want nothing to host, and your agent needs what the user did in the browser before the error.** BugTape captures that and serves it over MCP.

## FAQ

### Does Checkend still do error tracking?

Not on checkend.com. On 26 October 2026 its [modules page](https://checkend.com/docs/concepts/modules.md) lists errors as a planned module that is not started. [Checkend Cloud](https://cloud.checkend.com/signup) still takes early-access sign-ups that mention error tracking. Ask Checkend which one is current before you depend on it.

### Can I send events from a Sentry SDK to Checkend?

The current docs describe no Sentry endpoint. The errors plan says a future Checkend SDK will accept Sentry SDK calls and the server will keep Sentry and OpenTelemetry endpoints during a move. Checkend's own note says nothing in that plan is built (checked 26 Oct 2026, [modules page](https://checkend.com/docs/concepts/modules.md)).

### Is Checkend open source?

Its [free-forever page](https://checkend.com/free-forever/) says the core licence is Apache 2.0 and will not change. The site links to "GitHub soon", and the main source repository returned "not found" on 26 October 2026.

### Can BugTape receive events from a Sentry SDK?

No. BugTape uses its own browser script and SDKs.

### Can BugTape be self-hosted?

No. BugTape is hosted only, and data is stored in Sydney.

### What does BugTape cost?

Free with no card, Prepaid credits when you need more, or Pro at $29 a month. Current limits are on bugtape.ai/pricing.
